SCOPE OF WORK COVERED: A Journeyman plumber is someone with the qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to engage in the performance of any mechanical work pertaining to the installation, alteration, change, repair, removal, maintenance, or use in building or within three feet beyond the outside walls of building of pipes, fixtures and fittings for the delivery of the water supply, discharge of liquid and water carried waste or the building drainage system within the walls of the building. It includes that work pertaining to the water supply, distribution pipes, fixtures, and fixture traps, the soil waste and vent pipes, and the building drain and roof drains together with their devices, appurtenances, and connection where installed within the outside walls of the building.

PRE-APPROVAL: The fist step in obtaining a license is to submit a completed application in order to obtain approval for testing.

BUSINESS AND LAW: It is not necessary to take the Business Law Exam to obtain this license. Only the trade exams are required. The Business Law Exam is required to become a Plumbing Contractor.

EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 8,000 hours of on the job work experience training and approved educational instruction in not less than 4 years. OR 16,000 hours and not less than 8 years as a licensed apprentice. Work experience must include adequate hours in specific experience areas outlined in the state license application.

FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS: There are no state mandated financial requirements.

EXAM DETAILS: The exam is administered by PSI. It is a two-part exam, theory exam, and practical exam. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass each of the two parts. The exam is $72 for theTheory portion of the exam and $100 for the Practical portion.

THEORY EXAM DETAILS: It is a 120-question semi-open book exam with a four-hour time limit.

PRACTICAL EXAM DETAILS: There are three projects and a 3.5 hour time limit. The practical exam consists of three parts: a copper brazing project; a plastic (PVC Schedule 40) assembly project; and a copper assembly project.

***NOTICE*** Candidates must bring the following items to the practical exam: Torch(es) capable of brazing up to one-inch copper pipe and soldering copper assembly project 1 tape measure 1 tubing cutter (copper) 1 tubing cutter (PVC Schedule 40) 1 reamer 1 level with 45 degree reading 1 framing or Carpenters Square Tools to perform cooper and plastic pipe assemblies Bricks to support Safety glasses for soldering

BOND / INSURANCE: There is on state mandated bond or insurance requirements for this license

LICENSING FEE: $110 Application processing fee.

PROCESSING TIME: Applications are processed in the order they are received. Processing time is 2 to 8 weeks.

RECIPROCITY: The state does not have a reciprocity agreement with any other state for this license. However, reciprocity will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
